Not too late to sow native seed

This is the question of the hour. With temperature fluctuation between 20 degrees and 90 degrees in the same week, is it too late to sow the wildflowers this year? If you live in a warm climate where freezing temperatures don’t occur at all or winter conditions are finished you – or you just prefer to winter sow inside rather than outside just place your wildflower seeds in pots with moistened soil in the refrigerator for  a day or two, then to the freezer for a day or two. Go back and forth between fridge and freezer for a week or so and you will have duplicated the freeze-thaw cycle that breaks down seed shells outside. Then, start growing your wildflowers in a sunny window or under grow lights.. Thank you Wildflower Farm for sharing this advice.

Alpaca fiber for nesting birds

metal basket filled with alpaca fiber

Why not consider putting out some natural nesting material for your birds – they’ll put on a great show for you! Enjoy all the action as they busily move about pulling small beak full of soft material out of the basket, then returning to construct their nests. Cavity nesting species seem to be especially attracted to this soft, warming material.

These reusable baskets are stuffed with alpaca hair, a natural material that is ideal to put out since alpaca fiber wicks water, dries quickly, and most important, insulates nests well. The fiber does not tangle around bills or feet as string or twine might. Look for this and packages of 3 refills in the Pets and Wildlife section.
